Serra Serena Residence is a 2,500-square-foot vacation home project set in the mountains of Sierra Tramuntana. The concept involves restoring a deteriorated stone structure and shaping it into a retreat that honors Mallorcan heritage. A calm atmosphere is a primary focus, with open-air features and natural materials informing the overall design approach.

Serra Serena Residence | Mallorca, Spain
Project Goals
The clients, a young couple with Spanish roots, envisioned transforming the existing building into a place that preserves local construction methods. They wanted to reuse stone from the site, create an inviting outdoor setting with an infinity pool, and introduce modern comforts while keeping traditional elements visible. Fostering relaxation and connecting to the surrounding scenery were high priorities.
Design and Implementation
- Layout/Structural Changes: Reinforcement of the original load-bearing stone walls was central to enhancing stability without sacrificing historic character. Large openings were added to capture natural light and link indoor areas with the patio and pool.
- Materials and Finishes: Locally sourced stone and lime plaster define the walls, keeping a breathable finish well suited to Mallorca’s climate. High-performance windows address intense summer heat while retaining the property’s heritage. Tile flooring contributes a warm, timeless Spanish look.
- Key Elements: The outdoor living area takes center stage, with the pool acting as a gathering place under the Mediterranean sky. A muted, natural color palette complements the stone walls, and minimalist interiors place emphasis on the original structural details.
Challenges
Maintaining structural integrity while introducing large openings was a primary hurdle. Coordinating modern upgrades with an aging structure required careful methods, especially when preserving the authentic stone exterior. Reinforcements using steel beams and subtle concrete supports enabled the creation of broader openings without compromising the visual identity.
Outcome
Although still in design, the project outlines a pathway to reviving a historic space through thoughtful restoration and new amenities. This direction balances the couple’s aim of open-air living with respect for Mallorcan building traditions. The anticipated result is a serene getaway that highlights local stonework, celebrates authentic craftsmanship, and welcomes comfortable modern-day living.
